Art and Sustainability

Arlo’s art reflects his identity; it is deeply personal, thoughtful, and intentional. Through his work, he embarks on a journey of self-exploration. Throughout this journey, it is important to him that his creative process reflects his values. By choosing sustainable materials and environmentally conscious practices, Arlo integrates his commitment to the planet into every piece.

  • Wool is a completely natural, renewable, and biodegradable fiber. Sheep produce a new fleece annually, providing a continuous and sustainable supply of wool. In comparison to other natural, artificial, or synthetic fibers, wool requires significantly less water for its growth, manufacturing, and maintenance.

With sheep as a primary character, Arlo creates visual metaphors. The use of natural wool intentionally connects his figures to the animals they reference.

  • In the United States, approximately 17 million tons of textile waste are generated each year, with most of it being sent to landfills. To promote sustainable art practices, Arlo collects fabric from thrift stores, diverting waste from landfills.

The reuse of discarded fabrics and garments also has an artistic purpose. Arlo's incorporation of these materials symbolizes how individuals transitioning may alter their presentation or themselves through modification.

  • Arlo is transforming waste into a new medium by recycling makeup into paint for his sculptures. The makeup he uses is expired, unused, and donated by friends and family. This process diverts cosmetic waste from landfills, giving unwanted beauty products a new life.

The use of discarded makeup holds artistic significance. Arlo, who previously wore makeup to present himself as feminine before embracing his identity as a masculine person, has a collection of unwanted makeup products. By repurposing these items, he has discovered a new way to use makeup as a form of self-expression.
