Artist Statement
My work explores the beauty of self-expression in the face of societal and religious pressures to conform to narrow definitions of gender and presentation. Drawing on my own experiences and studies in art history, I use crafting media such as clay and wool to create whimsical doll-like sculptures that incorporate religious imagery. These pieces comment on the repressive and ironic conflicts between religion and politics, which are often weaponized in conjunction against marginalized groups. My dolls examine the process of shaping one's self-image in a way that is both affirming and a courageous act of defiance against ideals that restrict freedom and expression.
Materials & Media
For Arlo, his process must reflect his identity as much as the outcomes. Learn more about the materials he uses.
The Symbolism of Sheep
Arlo incorporates wool and sheep-like features in many of his works to invoke both religious and political symbolism, which he dissects and responds to in his art. Being a "sheep," as defined in either context, means being submissive, docile, and compliant. However, these traits are recontextualized to illustrate resilience, introspection, and boldness.
