On a snowy night, an envoy from the Kingdom of Khotan is ambushed on a lonely road, slaughtered alongside his entire escort. Not a soul survives, and the assailants disappear into the darkness, taking with them a priceless jade, tribute for the Emperor of Sui. The formidable deputy chief of the emperor’s secret intelligence agency, the Jiejian Bureau, Feng Xiao, is assigned to the case. His investigation draws him to Liugong City, where the land’s greatest martial artists gather for a mysterious auction.

But Liugong City has drawn the attention of a rival intelligence agency as well: the Zuoyue Bureau, which has dispatched Cui Buqu, a brilliant but ailing man whose secrets run deeper than even Feng Xiao’s. Equally proud and cunning, the two become instant rivals in a battle of wits. Yet neither can solve the case alone. To unravel the mystery before the trail goes cold, they must put aside their differences and join forces.

This story takes place in the same universe as the novel series Thousand Autumns, and is set after the end of the main story.
