It has been a hard month. The impact of recent ICE operations in our home state of Minnesota has been devastating, creating fear and destabilizing families and communities. At a time like this, it can be difficult to continue as if everything is normal. This includes our usual work on this podcast and the additional writing and commentary that we typically share in this newsletter. We did manage to read, record, and edit today’s episode as planned. However, we couldn't create the full slate of newsletter content we usually include. So today, we are simply sharing the episode itself—and, unexpectedly, it feels more relevant than we could have anticipated. In this volume of Peerless, the characters continue their investigation into horrific crimes in pursuit of justice. While they often succeed, the narrative is clear-eyed about how delayed justice frequently is—and how those most harmed often do not live long enough to see it served. This tension feels especially relevant right now, as many face a systematic assault on their fundamental liberties and dignity. For those directly impacted, the slow pace of the judicial system can make justice feel abstract, distant, or entirely unattainable. Being asked to endure while waiting for a resolution can feel like an impossible burden. The book doesn’t offer easy reassurance. But it does offer something—something short of hope, perhaps, yet enough to counter a feeling of hopelessness. One of the most painful aspects of this moment, for Minnesotans and for many across the country, is not only that grave injustices are occurring, but that those in positions of authority and responsibility often remain silent or inactive. In Peerless, we see that silence and complicity are not neutral acts. Those who enable or condone violence are ultimately held accountable alongside those who commit it. That accountability is not enough to undo harm, nor does it compare to the immediate end of real-world suffering. Watching our leads grapple with personal responsibility, justice, and their obligation to protect the most vulnerable feels deeply timely.
