We have complicated feelings about Li Jinglong & his attraction to HongjunWe talked about Li Jinglong, his self-image, his outward performance of masculinity, and his attraction to Hongjun at great length. In fact, we spent most of our discussion of this book on those things. With many loud snorts and interjections, even Arlo’s dog, Atlas, seemed to have opinions to share! This book introduces us to a lineup of compelling and complex characters, each with their nuances—traits we love and those we don't. However, the aspects we find unappealing about Li Jinglong seem much more significant than those of the other characters. All the book's characters generally dislike him, and this unpopularity has led him to portray himself dishonestly, embodying a troubling form of toxic masculinity. His attempts to salvage his tarnished image result in more frustration than success, which is frustrating to witness. Also, Hongjun and Li Jinglong have an inherent power dynamic in their relationship. Someone with a damaging reputation and the burden of constant judgment would seek solace in the presence of someone who does not judge him at all. However, while Hongjun is exceptionally compassionate and nonjudgmental, this quality stems from his innocence and immaturity. He is open to accepting Li Jinglong’s behavior primarily because he is young, inexperienced, has lived a life with little human interaction, and does not understand social expectations. Moreover, since Li Jinglong is Hongjun's boss, their relationship is complicated even further. There is so much we love about this book and everything within it is layered with so much nuance that it makes reading this novel so engaging. The relationship between Hongjun and Li Jinglong is no exception. So, we are eager to jump into the next book and see how this story develops.
