The Thousand Autumns and Peerless shared universe."Peerless" takes place in the same universe as "Thousand Autumns," and, accordingly, there is a lot of overlap between the two. In the first novel of "Peerless," we learn that the story is set after the conclusion of the main narrative in "Thousand Autumns," but before some of the later side stories. This timeline context can be identified through the current status of the emperor and the future crown prince, who is not yet the successor to the throne. Additionally, the political affairs between kingdoms and the presence of crossover characters provide further context. Beyond the plot and character crossover, we see a strong and consistent archetype presented in the main couple. This couple consists of a powerful, egotistical cultivator and an ailing Daoist. At the beginning of the story, similar to "Thousand Autumns," the Daoist finds himself in a vulnerable position, seemingly at the mercy of this narcissistic man as they navigate their situation. However, that is where the similarities end. The Daoist, Cui Buqu, quickly reveals a strong deviation from the previous character. He is quick-witted with a sharp tongue, displaying a level of shamelessness that rivals his eventual partner, Feng Xiao. While Shen Qiao was calm and serene, Cui Buqu approaches human nature with a jaded cynicism that provides him insight as an investigator and emboldens him to act recklessly to gain a strategic advantage. While the overlaps and similarities between these two novels are evident, their differences showcase Meng Xi Shi's mastery of storytelling.
